Power

electronics has been gaining attention as a key technology in appliances

because it contributes to the improvement of performance and efficiency in

products.  The purpose of this

presentation is to introduce the application of power electronics in

appliances.  The power electronics

technologies used in major products such as refrigerators, air-conditioners,

and washing machines will be briefly announced, and then detailed presentation

will be given on specific topics including model based sensorless control

strategies for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), condition

monitoring and fault diagnosis of inverter-fed PMSM drive for quality

assurance, and additional technologies for the low-cost implementation of the

inverter-fed PMSM drive.
