◈ Abstract : In this seminar, we introduce a tend of recent research and development concerning automation of building construction and present the new development of robot based building construction automation system. As modern buildings are becoming taller, the construction technologies become even more complicated. Moreover, the number of skilled construction workers is decreasing drastically as the world enters the aging society. These social environments force us to search for the novel convergence of construction and intelligent robotics technologies. We believe that the human-robot cooperation system, where robots carry outa heavy-load and dangerous task, and human operates the robot in a safe place, will play an important role on alleviating those problems. -

Trends of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs)
◈ Title : Trends of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs)
◈ Speaker : Byeong-Ha Park, Ph.D. (Samsung Electronics)
◈ Date & Time : Friday, September 9, 2011 (14:00pm ~ 15:30pm)

◈ Abstract : By virtue of rapid development of digital, analog, and wireless technology, many type of devices such as mobile, notebook, and digital camera, and so on, have been introduced in our life. Supplying power is the most fundamental and intrinsic functions of any electrical system. Voltage regulators, including both linear regulators and switching-mode regulators, provide such a function to convert unpredictable and unregulated supplies to stable, constant, accurate, regulated, and load-independent voltages. The input supplies are derived, for most part, from batteries, and off-line AC or DC sources, which usually exhibit significant voltage variations. Most integrated circuits including SoCs, in particular, draw power from already available DC supplies, like batteries, AC-DC converters, or DC-DC converters. The load, on the other hand, is composed of state-of-the-art application processors, digital-signal processors, modems, RF transceivers, other analog circuits which demand these power supplies to be quick, accurate, and capable of delivering high currents. Additionally portable battery-powered applications like mobile phones, tablets, and notebook computers require high power efficiency to maximally extend battery life. Portable electronics also demand these power regulators to be integrated onto a single die, with other circuits, like system house-keeping functions and the like, which present additional challenges, forcing designers to be knowledgeable in both system and integrated circuit design. Power management IC in the electrical systems includes all regulators like linear regulators and switching-mode regulators, battery management units, and all house-keeping functional blocks, and is thus changing from its traditional role of power distribution to smart management of the electrical power. While conventional power management functions were realized in terms of discrete and small scale ICs on the PCB board, recent advancement of mobile products such as smart phones and tablets has driven integration of all power management functions into a single die to support new application requirements: power conversion efficiency, power conversion spanning from the system to the circuit level, precise power regulation for continuously increasing system performance, small form factor, etc. In this talk, I will discuss market environments, the new trend of power management functions required for next generation mobile products and engineering challenges with direction to possible solutions, and finally the plan and vision in the power areas. -

◈ Abstract : Currentry, advanced countries which participated in recent wars like Afghanistan and Iraq are developing and operating military robots to save soldier’s life from big size units to small units.
Also advanced countries do not satisfy current military robot systems, but they are investing a lot of budget and endeavor to develop advanced military robot systems for the future war.
Our country have few Unmaned Aerial Vehicles in Army Corp level, and we do not have Unmaned Ground Vehicles and Unmaned Maritime Vehicles.
Therefore, I would like to introduce the development trend of military robot systems in our country and world-class military robot systems in advanced countries to develop the best military robots in Korea through the convergence of state of the art technologies from industry, university and institute under the support from the government and military authorities. -
Real-Time Scheduling on Multiprocessors & Non-Blocking Synchronization
◈ Title : Real-Time Scheduling on Multiprocessors & Non-Blocking Synchronization
◈ Speaker : Prof. Hyeonjoong Cho (Korea University)
◈ Date & Time : Friday, June 10, 2011 (14:00pm ~ 15:30pm)
◈ Place : LG Research Building, Room #101
◈ Host : Prof. Se-Young Oh (Tel. 2214)
◈ Abstract : Multiprocessor architectures are becoming more attractive for embedded systems, primarily because major processor manufacturers are making them decreasingly expensive. This makes such architectures very desirable for embedded system applications with high computational workloads, where additional, cost-effective processing capacity is often needed. Responding to this trend, RTOS vendors are increasingly providing multiprocessor platform support. But this exposes the critical need for real-time scheduling and synchronization for multiprocessors — a comparatively undeveloped area of real-time scheduling which has recently received significant research attention.
We will discuss about an optimal real-time scheduling algorithm for multiprocessors, one that satisfies all task deadlines, when the total utilization demand does not exceed the utilization capacity of the processors. The algorithm, called LLREF, is designed based on a novel abstraction for reasoning about task execution behavior on multiprocessors: the Time and Local Execution Time Domain Plane (or T-L plane). We will also discuss about a wait-free protocol for the single-writer/multiple-reader problem in small-memory embedded real-time systems. We present an analytical solution to obtain the minimum (optimal) space cost required for this problem considering a-priori knowledge of interferences—the first established. -
