With the advent of the high resolution DTV, the demand for customized display techniques has dramatically increased. In order to meet this demand, it is neces-sary to provide a user with a personalized display environment in which the user can enjoy various alternatives. In this presentation, we propose a novel framework, which allows for various functional approaches, to enhance users’ viewing experi-ence. First of all, we break the personalized displays into three categories; display for raising immersiveness, display for better understanding of contents, and display for viewing pleasure. In this talk, we address three parts in more detail and introduce our system implemented. This system can be applied to the next genera-tion DTV, which envisages personalized display techniques. Extension of the pro-posed system is our on-going work to provide more various personalized viewing options.

    Abstract

We have recently developed a 0.1-kg nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system that can be held at the palm of the hand. The entire system is 1200 times lighter, 1100 times smaller, yet 150 times more spin mass sensitive than a 120-kg state-of-the-art commercial benchtop NMR system. The drastic miniaturization was made possible by combining the physics of NMR with the high-performance silicon-CMOS radio-frequency (RF) integrated circuit. The miniature NMR system can be used to detect biomolecules such as cancer marker proteins and viruses, thus, can be useful for disease screening. This work showcases how silicon RF chips can be used not only for wireless applications, but also for disease screening in the low-cost, hand-held platform, in direct interface with biological samples. The NMR system can be also used for oil detection, environment control, and potentially, for quantum computing.

    Abstract

The idea of utilizing functional molecules as the electronic components in future ultrahigh-density electronic devices has generated tremendous attention. Obtaining transistor action from molecular orbital control has been the outstanding challenge of the field of molecular electronics nearly since its inception. In this talk, we demonstrate a direct electrostatic modulation of orbitals in a molecular transistor configuration, with both effective gate control and enhanced resonant coupling of the orbitals to the source and drain electrodes [1]. In second part of talk, our recent re-search on the organic non-volatile memories will be discussed [2].
If time is allowed, I will also briefly discuss other research results on nanoscale logic circuits [3] and graphene-electrode optoelectronic devices.

    Abstract

Recently, a new sampling theory called compressive sensing theory has been developed by signal processing and applied mathematics communities. According to compressive sensing, very accurate reconstruction is possible from severely limited data measurements under Nyquist sampling limit as long as it is sparse or can be sparsified under appropriates sparsifying transform. In this talk, we introduce the basic theory, and demonstrate how this theory can revolutionize various bio and neuro-imaging modalities such as NIRS, MRI, optics, T-ray imaging, CT, and PET; and illustrates how this theory gives us new insight in understanding biological systems.

Industrial revolution of the 18th century started mechanization and manufacturing in Great Britain. Many other countries fol-lowed the industrialization, while the most advanced countries have moved on to knowledge and creative industry. Today, in the flat world where technology is readily available, creativity is more important than ever to stay ahead of others. In this talk, we will study the importance of creativity, aspects of creativity, and lifestyle exercises that can enhance personal creativity. Creative opportunities come and go silently. Creativity awareness help grabbing the approaching creative opportunity.

    Abstract

We will briefly introduce the MSU power electronics research group and its main research topics. Then we will focus on power electronics for hybrid electric vehicles. Hybrid electric vehicles(HEVs) have achieved a great success in the last few years. Power converter is one of the key technologies in HEVs. This paper discusses the technologies of converter systems in the hybrid electric vehicles. With all these technologies, lower cost, higher fuel efficiency, and higher reliability are achievable.

During last several decades, there have been tremendous changes in the field of telecommunications, including the Internet revolution and the wireless explosion. These two domains brought forth many disruptive differences in the telecommu-nication devices and equipments, networks and services, and in our way of com-municating with each other, eventually resulted in the new way of life. However, we still observe the Internet based services evolving into new concepts, so called web 2.0, and the wireless services delivering video and data. These consecutive revolutionary changes seem to resemble the first telecommunications revolution in the 19th century. Korea once used to be very under-developed country in the telecommunications industries and technologies, but now is one of the top tier countries even with No.1 in the Digital Opportunity Index evaluated by ITU. By looking at the past history and the current position of the telecommunications in-dustry, it may be possible to find the new way ahead toward the next generation of the technology and industry.

Within the next decade, we still need to overcome big roadblocks to migrate towards seamless connectivity for enabling ever richer content and service experiences. There are a number of wireless connectivity solutions being discussed or developed, as either public standards or proprietary solutions, to enable future visions of the personal network. High speed data and multimedia service needs would come into the wireless market, even with changes in the business models, and is expected to challenge both the incumbent service pro-viders as well as the wireless gears and chip vendors. The rich and high-rate multimedia contents which currently are being delivered down to PCs would soon show up in mobile handsets, and further penetrate in depth into the personal environment of experiences, and the personal devices would have to be equipped with more bandwidth and with a variety of wireless connectivity solutions. Korea recently launched the first mobile internet service based on 802.16e, locally called WiBro, hoping to open a new era of wireless data which would continue the country’s success stories on the wireless voice and the wireline data services. Though the market is not big, Korea is known as the test bed of the new IT technologies and services, due to the proliferation of internet and mobile services and the prompt responses from the market. A few examples of this new trend include, but not limited to, personal blog, online games, home and mobile shopping, convergence devices, VoIP services, and so on. Even though the tele-communications industry in Korea seems to be in good shape, there are many challenges and threats as well as opportunities for new growth. The role of technology is much more important than ever, and the business capabilities should be strengthened in order to proceed to the world market.
