  • Beomhyeon Kim (Integrated Program), Selected for the 2024 IEEE (AP-S) Fellowship Program

    Beomhyeon Kim, a student in the Integrated Program at POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering (advisor: Prof. Wonbin Hong), has been selected for the prestigious 2024 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Fellowship Program. This fellowship is awarded to only a few exceptional candidates worldwide through a rigorous selection process.

    The IEEE AP-S Fellowship Program is given annually to Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers with outstanding research achievements and the potential for future excellence. Beomhyeon Kim was selected for this year’s fellowship (US$5000) due to the excellence of his research proposal, which included 39 published papers and six awards at national and international academic conferences.

    His research project, titled “Shared Aperture Antenna System in Mobile Devices,” introduces a new paradigm that integrates electromagnetics, display, circuit systems, and communication engineering. The project explores the use of shared aperture concepts, extending from antenna design theory to beam synthesis, multifunctional technology utilization, antenna module and power synthesis at the device stage, and applications in beam management and MIMO systems.

  • Jeonghyo Lee (Integrated Program), Recipient of the “Honorable Mention” at IEEE APS/URSI 2024

    Jeonghyo Lee, a student in the Integrated Program at POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering (supervised by Prof. Wonbin Hong), received the “Honorable Mention” at the 2024 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and ITNC-USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting (IEEE AP-S/URSI) in the Student Paper Competition for his paper titled “Independent, Concurrent Dual-Harmonic Frequencies Operation of Overlapped Spatial-Temporal Phased Array using Dual-Functional Radiator.”

    This paper proposes the operation of a dual-resonant frequency in a completely overlapped spatial-temporal phased array using a single module. The research experimentally demonstrates high gain and wide beam coverage. Through a new frequency-selective feed structure called Bent CLSC and a dual-functional radiator with frequency-selective radiation characteristics, this study outperforms previous phased array antenna research in terms of both size and performance. The innovative performance compared to existing studies worldwide earned it high recognition and led to the “Honorable Mention” award.

    The 2024 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and ITNC-USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting (IEEE AP-S/URSI) is the world’s largest international conference in the field of IEEE antennas and propagation, held this year in Florence, Italy. A total of 314 papers were submitted to the APS/URSI 2024 Student Paper Competition, and Jeonghyo Lee’s paper was awarded the “Honorable Mention.”

  • Jaehee Kim (Integrated Program), Selected for the “IEEE CASS Student Travel Grants”

    Jaehee Kim, a student in the Integrated Program at POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering (advisor: Prof. Youngju Lee), has been selected as a recipient of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) Student Travel Grants.

    Each year, IEEE CASS awards Student Travel Grants to students who have made outstanding achievements in the Circuits and Systems field, supporting them in sharing innovative ideas at the CASS flagship conference. Jaehee Kim was selected this year for the excellence of her paper titled “Constrained Sorter Design Using Zero-One Principle,” presented at the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) held in Singapore from May 19 to May 22.

    In her research, Jaehee Kim proposed the world’s first design framework for effectively designing constrained sorters, which are widely used in key signal processing algorithms. The results showed a sorter implementation that goes beyond the limitations of conventional heuristic optimization methods.

    Professor Sooseok Choi’s research team, consisting of Seungmin Nam (Ph.D. student, first author), Wontae Jeong, and Junhyeok Shin (under the supervision of Professor Sooseok Choi), has developed the first-ever nanostructure color wavelength tuning optical device that overcomes the limitations of previous research in color wavelength control. This device allows for precise and free adjustment of color wavelengths in both short and long wavelength directions.

The selection process, conducted by the IEEE AP-S Education Committee, involves reviewing recommendation letters from advisors and personal statements from applicants. This grant aims to provide opportunities for students with high potential for future academic excellence to participate in the symposium.

    Recognized for the excellence of her research, Myungseon Kim also received the “2024 IEEE APS/URSI Mojgan Daneshmand Grant” in addition to the Student Travel Grant at the same symposium.

  • Wonhyeong Heo (Master's Program), Receives “Honorable Mention” at IEEE APS/URSI 2024

    Huh Won-hyung, a master’s student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at POSTECH (supervised by Professor Hong Won-bin), received an “Honorable Mention” in the Student Paper Competition at the 2024 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting (IEEE AP-S/URSI).

    His paper, titled “Implementation and Applications of Antenna Utilizing Hinge of Foldable Mobile Device,” proposes enhancing antenna performance in folding and unfolding conditions by implementing an antenna within the hinge of a foldable device. The study introduces the Antenna on Display and Simultaneous Radiation methods, with experimental results validating the performance improvements. The innovative approach and superior performance of this research were highly regarded, leading to the “Honorable Mention” recognition.

    The 2024 IEEE AP-S/URSI, the world’s largest international symposium in the field of antennas and propagation, organized by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society, will be held in Florence, Italy. This year, the Student Paper Competition received a total of 314 submissions, with Huh’s work standing out to earn the Honorable Mention.

  • Seongjun Park, a postdoctoral researcher, has been awarded the "Best Paper Award" at JCCI 2024.

    Seongjun Park, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Electrical Engineering at POSTECH (supervised by Professor Kim Yong-Jun), received the Best Paper Award at the 34th Joint Conference on Communications and Information (JCCI 2024) for his paper titled “Dual Mask Error Correction Code Transformer.”

    In this paper, a method to improve decoding performance by designing an error correction code decoder with two parallel transformer structures is proposed. The two transformers consist of self-attention structures with different mask matrices, achieving performance improvement through the diversity effect of the decoder. Additionally, the proposed algorithm demonstrates excellent decoding performance not only for a single type of error correction code but also across various codes.

    At this year’s Joint Conference on Communications and Information, a total of five papers were selected for the Best Paper Award.

  • Myung-Sun Kim (PhD Candidate) Receives 'Mojgan Daneshmand Grant' from IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S)

    Myeongseon Kim, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Electrical Engineering at POSTECH under the supervision of Professor Wonbin Hong, has been awarded the ‘Mojgan Daneshmand Grant’ at the 2024 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and ITNC-UNSC-URSI Radio Science Meeting (IEEE AP-S/URSI).

    Established in 2021, the Mojgan Daneshmand Grant aims to highlight the achievements of women in the field of electromagnetics and encourage their leadership roles. Each year, only 12 recipients are selected worldwide, and this marks the first time a scholar from Korea has been honored. Selection criteria include the innovation of the research project, publication records, and accolades from domestic and international conferences.

    Kim’s research project, titled “Sub-Degree Direction-of-Arrival Retrieval under Multipath Propagation Conditions in the UWB Spectrum using Antenna-on-Display,” focuses on achieving high-precision indoor positioning in multipath environments. The study proposes a highly directional UWB AoD antenna that operates effectively within the limited space of mobile devices and develops a positioning algorithm that accounts for complex indoor propagation conditions to provide accurate location information. This fusion of antenna technology and positioning systems introduces a novel approach to localization, with potential applications in future mobile and IoT devices.

    Dong-Seob Lee, an integrated PhD student from POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering (advisor: Professor Won-Bin Hong), was awarded the Grand Prize (최우수상) at the 9th Electromagnetic Measurement Paper Competition hosted by the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science (KIEES). His paper, titled “Development of a Novel Multiphysics Evaluation Metric for Precise Measurement of FOWLP Antenna Performance: Equivalent Loss Modeling, Die Shift Tolerance, and Thermal Analysis,” received top honors for its innovation and academic excellence.

    About the Research

    Lee’s research introduces a novel multiphysics evaluation metric for accurately measuring the performance of Fan-Out Wafer-Level Package (FOWLP) antennas. By integrating thermodynamics, electromagnetics, and nanotechnology, the proposed methodology offers precise measurements applicable to advanced technologies in 5G/6G communications, radar, sensing semiconductors, and wireless communication systems.

    The study’s emphasis on equivalent loss modeling, die shift tolerance, and thermal analysis provides a comprehensive framework that enhances the accuracy and reliability of antenna performance evaluations. Its potential impact on future applications across multiple disciplines was a key factor in being selected for the Grand Prize.

    The Electromagnetic Measurement Paper Competition is organized to highlight the importance of electromagnetic measurement in research and to promote accurate measurement techniques based on established standards.
