  • Low Power Design: Facts, Myths, and Misunderstandings

◈ Title : Low Power Design: Facts, Myths, and Misunderstandings
◈ Speaker : Prof.  Youngsoo Shin (KAIST)
    ◈ Date & Time : Friday, October  28, 2011 (15:50pm ~ 17:20pm)
◈ Place : LG Research Building, Room #101
◈ Host :  Department of Electrical Engineering (Prof. Sungjoo Yoo)
BK21 Educational Institute of Future Information Technology
                 IDEC Distinguished Lecturer Program
◈ Abstract : An example is “My chip consumes 100mW”. Power consumption cannot  be declared as a concrete number because there are so much inaccuracies and uncertainties involved during the estimation. Another example is the statement that “My chip consumes 100mW and this is the lowest I can get”. After understanding that a chip is typically designed with huge amount of margins, it is easy to see that the limit is far beyond. A few of these things, which often go unnoticed but deserve careful consideration, are addressed in this talk.

  • Current Aspects and Future Perspectives of STT-MRAM

◈ Title : Current Aspects and Future Perspectives of STT-MRAM
    ◈ Speaker : Lee, Jae-kyu  Ph.D. (Samsung Electronics)
    ◈ Date & Time : Friday, November 18, 2011 (14:00pm ~ 15:30pm)
◈ Place : LG Research Building, Room #101
    ◈ Host :  Prof. Bumman Kim (T. 2231)
BK21 Educational Institute of Future Information Technology
◈ Abstract : As technology nodes shrink dramatically, the development of DRAMs has faced many technical problems and challenges to meet the requirements of cell capacitor and access transistors. Many researchers have made great efforts on those issues and tried to develop novel concepts in memory devices to overcome physical limitations. Among several alternative memory concepts, one of the most promising devices is STT-MRAM (Spin Transfer Torque- Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory) to replace conventional memories due to its speed, cost and data retention. In this talk, I will introduce STT-MRAM as a prominent emerging memory and review STT-MRAM in accordance with the replacement of DRAM and new applications. The basic operation of STT_MRAM will be explained compared to conventional memories such as DRAM and Flash memory. Along with the process integration of STT-MRAM, some design issues are also discussed.

  • Real-Time Scheduling on Multiprocessors & Non-Blocking Synchronization

    ◈ Title : Real-Time Scheduling on Multiprocessors & Non-Blocking Synchronization
◈ Speaker : Prof. Hyeonjoong Cho (Korea University)
    ◈ Date & Time : Friday,  June  10, 2011 (14:00pm ~ 15:30pm)
◈ Place : LG Research Building, Room #101
    ◈ Host : Prof.  Se-Young Oh (Tel. 2214)
◈ Abstract : Multiprocessor architectures are becoming more attractive for embedded systems, primarily  because major processor manufacturers are making them decreasingly expensive. This makes such architectures very desirable for embedded system applications with high computational  workloads, where additional, cost-effective processing capacity is often needed. Responding to this trend, RTOS vendors are increasingly providing multiprocessor platform support. But this   exposes the critical need for real-time scheduling and synchronization for multiprocessors — a comparatively undeveloped area of real-time scheduling which has recently received significant research attention.
We will discuss about an optimal real-time scheduling algorithm for multiprocessors, one that satisfies all task deadlines, when the total utilization demand does not exceed the utilization  capacity of the processors. The algorithm, called LLREF, is designed based on a novel abstraction for reasoning about task execution behavior on multiprocessors: the Time and Local Execution Time Domain Plane (or T-L plane). We will also discuss about a wait-free protocol for the single-writer/multiple-reader problem in small-memory embedded real-time   systems. We present an analytical solution to obtain the minimum (optimal) space cost          required for this problem considering a-priori knowledge of interferences—the first established.

  • Development Trend of Military Robots

◈ Title: Development Trend of Military Robots
◈ Speaker : Prof. Won Seung Lee (KAIST)
    ◈ Date & Time : Friday, September 2, 2011 (14:00pm ~ 15:30pm)
◈ Place : LG Research Building, Room #101
    ◈ Host : Prof.  Se-Young Oh (Tel. 2214)
◈ Abstract : Currentry, advanced countries which participated in recent wars like Afghanistan and   Iraq are developing and operating military robots to save soldier’s life from big size units to small units.
Also advanced countries do not satisfy current military robot systems, but they are investing a lot of budget and endeavor to develop advanced military robot systems for  the future war.
Our country have few Unmaned Aerial Vehicles in Army Corp level, and we do not have Unmaned Ground Vehicles and Unmaned Maritime Vehicles.
Therefore, I would like to introduce the development trend of military robot systems in  our country and world-class military robot systems in advanced countries to develop the best military robots in Korea through the convergence of state of the art technologies from industry, university and institute under the support from the government and military authorities.
